How Learning Disabilities Increase Addiction Risks

Most individuals suffering from a learning disability have a hard time coping with the everyday stresses of life. The inability to fit in as well as the social stigma cause individuals to self-medicate in order to numb their minds and block out the pain. Learning disabilities, like mental health illness, have the potential to cause substance addiction and luckily, both can be treated at a rehabilitation facility.

Studies show that roughly 41 percent of students have some sort of learning disability. A person may show peculiar speech patterns as well as a difficulty in reading and writing. Their ability to learn new things is extremely challenging and they may misinterpret information.

Relationships are difficult to form and seem almost impossible to manage. Those who are struggling with a learning disability may feel lonely and develop low self-esteem.

Most people do not recognize when someone is struggling with a learning disability; therefore, they are expected to act as a normal member of the community. However, when they flounder, they are subjected to criticism or even bullying. This combined with low self-esteem is usually followed by substance abuse to cope.

Attention Deficit Hyperactivity Disorder

Attention Deficit Hyperactivity Disorder, or ADHD, is not categorized as a learning disability but it does prevent an individual from being able to focus. Those who suffer from ADHD have disorganized thoughts, impulsive behavior, difficulty following simple rules and are easily distracted. The prescribed medications for ADHD are Concerta, Adderall and Ritalin; all of which, if taken from childhood to adult age, have the potential to cause addiction.
